INSTITUTIONS UNDER GOVERNMENT OF INDIA
The Central Academies of State Forest Service (CASFOS) impart training to the newly recruited State Forest Service (SFS) Officers as well as in -service training of SFS Officers. The three Central Academies imparts professional training in forestry to Assistant Conservator of Forests recruited by the various States and candidates sponsored by Universities and Wood-based Industries. It has played an important role in the improvement of technical manpower in forestry for the South East Asian Countries by organizing special courses on request.
The Regular SFS Training consists of a two-years course. The three Central Academies has a capacity to train 80 officers every year. The training is fully residential and aims at overall personality development, with emphasis on field training in addition to the theoretical aspects. Physical training and sports constitute an important part of the training curriculum and are compulsory. On successful completion of the training, a diploma in Forestry is awarded. Apart from the three Central Academies , there is one Rangers College under the direct control of the Directorate of Forest Education called the Eastern Forest Rangers College, located at Kurseong near Darjeeling in West Bengal; which imparts induction training and in-service training of Forest Range Officers (FRO's).
